1COM0051: Computer Systems Architecture
SemB 2009-2010 Assessments

(Note that these plans are subject to change - check here regularly)

(last updated Wed 10 Mar 2010)

This module is assessed by 25% Coursework and 75% Final Examination. To pass the module you must pass on the overall mark.

During the semester there will be a multiple-choice test, answered using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets. This will count as the coursework assessement. The test will be done in the lecture times. Check the details as they become available below carefully to ensure that you are in the right place at the right time.

The final exam will consist of 30 multiple-choice questions, taken from the whole module's material.

You may use the UH-approved calculator in the exam and in the test.

Past Exam Papers:

As this is entirely a multiple-choice exam, I have included the marks below each question in the answered versions. (We do not normally release marking schemes for exams)

Note that we will not be testing the Finite State Machine topic this year in either the test or the exam. Consequently, if you are revising from the 2008 paper below, you can ignore questions 9 and 10.

Multiple Choice Forms

We are currently using the EDPAC120 form. Do not write or mark outside the boxes or the form may not be able to be read by the machine.

For coursework tests, you should print your name clearly under CANDIDATE NAME, with your family name (surname) first and you should code it underneath.
In the exam, you should NOT write or code your name.

For coursework tests, you should print and code your 8-digit Student Registration Number under CANDIDATE NUMBER.
In the exam you should use your special, 6-digit 'candidate number' which is sent to you in November on the green module confirmation forms.

In both tests and exams, you should fill in the SUBJECT box as instructed. This will help us to identify the form if it is separated from the rest of the forms. You may also be asked to fill in the SUBJECT CODE box with group or other information. Follow the instructions on the paper!

In the answer section, you need to mark clearly ONE answer for each question on the paper. Use a PENCIL to mark the answer chosen by putting a horizontal line through the appropriate letter. If you change your mind on an answer or have made a mistake, you can rub out the mark if it is in pencil. Rub it out thoroughly. If you leave more than one answer marked, or if you do not mark any answer, it will be treated as incorrect and you will lose half a mark.

Bring two or more pencils and a rubber to the tests and the exam. You will not be able to borrow equipment during tests or exams.
(Note: red ink, and possibly other colours, are not recognised at all by the OMR machine.)

Guessing and negative marking:

In the test and in the exam, each correct answer gains 2 marks and each incorrect answer loses half a mark. If you do not answer, or if you code more than one choice for a question it will be treated as incorrect and you will lose half a mark.

So, if you do not know the answer to a question, or if you are unsure, you should GUESS.
