The field of Socially Intelligent Agents (SIA) is an increasingly important research area that comprises strongly interdisciplinary
approaches. This book provides a core collection of current work in this rapidly growing field. It serves as a useful and timely reference for a
wide readership, e.g., computer scientists, roboticists, web programmers and designers, computer users, psychologists, cognitive scientists, and
other researchers interested in the issue of how humans relate to computers and robots, and how these agents in return can relate to
them. The first chapter provides the rationale for the book and introduces the following 32 chapters, in which researchers at the forefront of SIA
research address topics such as: social robotics, embodied conversational agents, affective computing, anthropomorphism, narrative and
story-telling, social aspects in multi-agent systems, and new technologies for education and therapy, among others. The main strength of the book is
the breadth of topics covered that allow readers to get a comprehensive overview of research activities in the area. The book is suitable for
researchers as well as postgraduate and PhD students interested in Socially Intelligent Agents. It can be used as research material in
different University courses, such as Applied Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Agents, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, and
Situated/Embodied Artificial Intelligence.
