The Critical Parameters of Interactive Systems: HCI as Engineering Science
The design and development of an interactive system is, whether one likes it
or not, an engineering activity. As a consequence, benefits should follow
from treating the supporting research discipline - Human Computer
Interaction - as an engineering science. At XRCE we have for some years
been exploring the implications of taking this stance. In particular, we
have identified the need to set performance targets when designing
interactive systems. This has meant understanding what constitutes a valid
performance parameter for a system intended to support humans at work, and
how to model performance in the course of design. This talk will report on
recent progress by the Critical Parameters team at XRCE, and will describe
how it has led to some innovative designs for interactive products and
prototypes.
The ISE research group meets on Wednesdays from 2 pm in E374 at UH Hatfield Campus.
