The History of PSiFA

PSiFA is, at this very moment, in it's 32nd year! (I can tell you're impressed)

Basically, PSiFA has always been about having fun with Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror and the rest of it. While there is a time and a place for obsessive fandom, (Let's call it what it is, a rather disturbing tendency to know ALL about your favourite T.V show, film, books, what ever.) PSiFA believes it is more important to have fun. We want to have a laugh and do silly things or, better yet, get others to do silly things and laugh AT them!

Around the end of the 1990's, PSiFA hit a rather black period, and everything went wrong. Little more happened than people watching Star Trek videos and… well, that's ALL that happened. Each night. Every night. But now all that's changed! (Hurrah for us!) New blood was brought in to help combat the cancer that had spread. The old PSiFA was killed off, dumped in a sack and buried under a patio, and a new, fresh PSiFA was born! No longer do we have childish fights with Morpheus, our role-playing chums, no longer are we boring and sad and no longer will we stand for Star Trek captains with silly hair! PSiFA is dead, long live PSiFA!

About 2006 the amount of regular members (there were lots of members, but most were quite busy some of the time so weren't turning up as often) was starting to dwindle a little. Quite often in most years there is a 'core' membership of people turning up each week, or almost each week, with some members only coming along to meetings occasionally. At the start of the 2006/07 academic year, we strived to get lots of members from the start of the year and this, along with convicing friends we knew from elsewhere in the University, helped us to start the year with a fairly decent sized membership. And the opposite to the previous year happened, a few more people started turning up as the year went on. The growing membership group talked before and after meetings and met up after some meetings (something which hadn't happened as much in previous years). One member from that year said that PSiFA is the 'friendliest society at the Uni'.

The range of things shown on Movie nights was also incresed, as was the number of different games played on a Monday. All memebers got to experience something new, and were able to bring something along to the group. The start time for meetings was made earlier to fit more watching time in, and part of the way through the year we started watching an episode or two from a series before watching the 'main' movie, which was proved to be a success. There were some 'hicups' throughout the year, mainly with room booking, but everything was always sorted out before the meetings.

For the 30th year of PSIFA, some special anniversary events were held, letting old members getting back in touch with each other. A special Hypo-Space was produced for the last of the three events held.

PSiFA Reunions

PSiFA members, past and present have held reunions at various times (mainly on Anniversary dates). A separate site has been made specifically for the facilitation of past and present members meeting and organising events. This can be found here: Ex-PSiFAns

The Future of PSiFA?

The future of PSiFA is currently unknown (at least until we figure out time travel), but in order to guarentee the success of the society we need members to go along to meetings, people to help out, people to suggest things on how to improve, the list goes on. You can easily be a part of this great and diverse society by joining today!
